Stellar Blade, the well-received sci-fi action adventure from developer Shift Up, is aiming for a PC release in 2025, and the studio says it expects sales to surpass those seen on console.
Stellar Blade, which tells the story of Eve, the sword-wielding soldier, as she attempts to free Earth from a monstrous alien threat known as Naytibas, launched exclusively for PlayStation 5 in April and sold 1 million copies by the end of June.
And now Shift Up has announced plans to follow that success with a PC version sometime next year. The news was shared in the developer’s Q3 2024 earnings report, where it said that a Stellar Blade PC release was being “considered within 2025.” He then added that due to “Steam’s growing market share in the AAA gaming sector and the global success of Black Myth: Wukong, we expect performance on PC to surpass that of consoles.”
Black Myth: Wukong, for context, was a huge hit when it launched in August, managing to sell 10 million copies on PC and PS5 in just three days and quickly becoming the most watched game on Chinese streaming platforms. And while Shift Up’s goals for Stellar Blade on PC are likely to be considerably more modest, the developer still has positive expectations for the game‘s continued popularity.
“To improve the value of the intellectual property and maintain momentum, we have been constantly releasing content patches and updates, which has helped maintain the popularity of the game,” he noted of the PS5 version, adding that “with the addition of the Nier: Automata DLC and ongoing marketing activities, we plan to maintain the popularity of the intellectual property until the expansion of the platform.”
Stellar Blade’s Nier: Automata DLC launches for PS5 on November 20, and there’s also a “non-ponytail” hair option for Eve, plus a new photo mode, on the way.
Eurogamer’s Jessica Orr gave Stellar Blade four stars when she reviewed it earlier this year. “[There’s] “A bit of weirdness,” he wrote, “but its killer tunes and vibrant, fluid combat, plus a transformative hard mode, are enough to leave you spellbound.”
