Square Enix veteran Akitoshi Kawazu, known for his work on the Final Fantasy and SaGa series, has shared his thoughts on the highly anticipated successor to the Nintendo Switch, which is expected to be announced in 2025. Speaking about his excitement for the platform, Kawazu highlighted both personal and professional enthusiasm for the new console.
“The successor to Nintendo Switch that Nintendo will announce in 2025 and the corresponding market strategy that Nintendo will develop, I look forward to as a user and creator,” said Kawazu.
While the successor to the Nintendo Switch has yet to be announced, there have been many rumors about it, including leaks that appear to show its design. Based on these leaks, it can be expected to be a more iterative improvement over its predecessor while also having a similar design philosophy. It will also be backward compatible with the original Nintendo Switch games, something that was confirmed by Nintendo itself.
Square Enix has always been compatible with Nintendo hardware, although they failed to bring some of their biggest games like Final Fantasy VII Remake or other graphically heavy releases. They released Kingdom Hearts on the Nintendo Switch, but it was limited to a cloud version of the game, which received a lot of negative feedback.
Based on producer comments, it looks like Square Enix could have a lot in the works for the Nintendo Switch. Considering the sales success of the original Switch, it’s no surprise that developers are excited to see improved hardware that retains all the core features while also offering more powerful hardware to run the latest games.
Nintendo has stated that it will announce the Switch successor before the end of its current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2025.
