Frisco, Texas – considered the favorite for work when Brian Schottenheimer was hired as coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Matt Eberflus will become the defensive coordinator of the team, according to a source.
Eberflus served as Chicago Bears chief coach for almost three seasons before being fired on November 29 in the middle of a six games losing streak. He had a record of 14-32 as a coach, but had a solid career as a defensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts of 2018-21.
In their first season, the colts passed from number 30 in annotations and total defense to numbers 10 and 11, respectively. In three of their four seasons, the Colts had a scoring defense among the 10 best and twice were the 10 best in yards.
Eberflus served as the assistant coach of the cowboys under Jason Garrett for seven seasons. He joined the team as coach of supporters with Rob Ryan as a defensive coordinator, directing a scheme of 3-4 and remained when the cowboys changed to a 4-3 under Mount Kiffin and Rod Marinelli.
In 2016-17, he was the coordinator of the defensive passes game. Anthony Spencer and Sean Lee did their first Pro Bowls as jeans with Eberflus as their coach.
Eberflus inherits a defense of Mike Zimmer that finished 28 in yards (355.2) and 31 at points (27.5) per game, but it was made by injuries to the defensive ends Demarcus Lawrence, who played only four games with an injury in the foot and Micah Parsons, who lost four games with a high ankle sprain. The corner Trevon Diggs and the Demarkion Overshown supporter also ended the season in the injured reserve with knee injuries.
Their injuries could take them to waste their time when the 2025 season begins. Diggs underwent surgery last week, while Overshown suffered torn crossed anterior, posterior crossed, crossed and medial collaterals in the left knee.
Cowboys is also expected to hire the former defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers, Nick Sorensen, as coordinator of special teams to replace John Fasel, who joined the Tennessee Titans after his contract expired.
Sorenson worked with Schottenheimer with the Seattle Seahawks and Jacksonville Jaguars.
Schottenheimer does not travel to Senior Bowl this week in Mobile, Alabama, so he can concentrate on completing his coaching staff.
