Sony confirms God of War Ragnarok's appearance at the Super Bowl

On February 12, Super Bowl LVII is scheduled to take place, and Sony has confirmed that God of War Ragnarok will make an announcement or run an advertisement there.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will face off in Super Bowl LVII this Sunday, February 12, but it appears Kratos and/or Thor from God of War Ragnarok may also be present. The presence of God of War Ragnarok has been confirmed by Sony via Facebook and Instagram posts from PlayStation Canada, as well as a press release.

Although the appearance of God of War Ragnarok at Super Bowl LVII may be unexpected given that the game was released the previous year, the Super Bowl is known for its abundance of advertisements each year (alongside the football, of course). Popular IPs like Breaking Bad and Scream 6 have already had ads and trailers air, and Logan Paul and KSI’s Prime drink as well as The Flash are scheduled to have Super Bowl ads as well. Given this context, Sony’s confirmation of a screening for one of its biggest 2022 releases comes as little surprise.

Thor’s Mjolnir is surrounded by a winter storm in God of War Ragnarok, and PlayStation Canada teased that Fimbulwinter will be available on February 12 during the Super Bowl. Following this brief teaser, a press release was released (and shared by PSU), which stated that “This teaser was discovered by Odin’s ravens, and it “is forecasting a blizzard on Midgard this Sunday night.” Make sure to watch the big game this weekend to see how it all turns out!” Of course, the main query at this point is what will be displayed.

Eric Williams, the director of God of War Ragnarok, previously stated that there were no plans for DLC because Santa Monica put everything it had into the rather large and drawn-out game. As a result, it is unlikely to be connected to any potential DLC. The most likely outcome is a straightforward advertisement for God of War Ragnarok, though it might be connected to the game’s New Game Plus mode. Given that hardware supply shortages have largely ended, Sony is likely to promote the PS5 with its Norse adventure. Even though it could be something significant, the PS5 ad is the most likely option.

Of course, God of War will continue to be released after the Super Bowl. The Norse Saga’s final game, God of War Ragnarok, will feature the New Game Plus mode sometime this spring. However, even though this will be the end of the Norse Saga, there are countless opportunities for additional games or spin-offs. If anything is certain, it’s that nothing similar won’t exist; however, the cherished IP has a promising future regardless.

God of War Ragnarok is available now for PS4 and PS5.
