We already knew it was coming, thanks to Paramount’s announcement at the end of last year, but the Sonic the Hedgehog 4 movie already has a release date. However, there is still a good way out, as the next Sonic project on the big screen won’t arrive until 2027.
More specifically, Sonic the Hedgehog 4, as reported by Variety, is expected to hit theaters on March 19, 2027. No further details have been revealed, but of course, we have a pretty good idea of who will be joining. Sonic’s team in the fourth installment.
Over the course of its three previous entries, the Sonic film series has established a tradition of including a big character reveal during its credits. Sonic 1 suggested that Tails would be present in the second Sonic movie, while Shadow the Hedgehog emerged from his slumber in a mid-credits sequence of Sonic 2. And as for the recently released Sonic 3, that made it pretty clear. Regardless of where the story goes, it seems unlikely that Sega and Paramount will be ready to conclude the series when Sonic the Hedgehog 4 arrives in 2027. As Variety noted, Sonic 3 proved to be a huge success when it released in December. generating $422 million at the global box office so far, a figure that officially makes it the highest-grossing entry in the film series so far.
Eurogamer’s Ed Nightingale was also wowed by last year’s film, calling it a “genuine Sonic game with Keanu added” in his four-star review. “Sonic 3 is a smash hit and a fitting end to the Year of Shadows,” he wrote. “He’s wisecracking and self-aware… while his flashy action thrills along with an unbridled sense of cool that’s only enhanced by Reeves as Shadow.”
