Actor Jim Carrey has said he is open to returning as Dr. Robotnik in a future Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
Carrey has played the key villain in all three Sonic movies, but in the past, he suggested that he wasn’t under pressure to accept roles in movies he wasn’t personally interested in.
The latest film, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, also ends on an ambiguous note for Carrey’s Robotnik. However, speaking to Japanese YouTube channel Cinema Today, the actor suggested he would be willing to return for a potential Sonic 4.
“I’m definitely open,” he said. “I’m open to the idea and usually they come to me with the next idea and if I say, ‘that sounds fun,’ then I’ll do it. I don’t feel tied to anything in life, unless it’s something that interests me.
He added: “I certainly love this team, I love this gang that makes these movies and I love the fans. There’s a lot of really great energy around it, great responses, and fans jump up and say, ‘How about you do this?’ They have been of great help. “I think we are all making this movie together.”
Since its debut last week, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has grossed around $210 million globally, according to Deadline. It needs to surpass the $405 million of the last film to become the highest-grossing installment of the series.
Paramount Pictures has reportedly greenlit a fourth Sonic the Hedgehog movie. According to Variety, Sonic 4 is in the planning stages and is expected to release in spring 2027.
The three Sonic films were directed by Jeff Fowler, starring Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik and Ben Schwartz as Sonic.
Speaking to VGC last year, Sega transmedia boss Justin Scarpone said he has big ambitions for Sega’s future as an entertainment company and revealed that he plans to open an official Sega store in Tokyo, Japan.
