Hollow Knight fans have been eagerly awaiting updates on the long-awaited follow-up, Hollow Knight: Silksong, but recent developments have only added to the conspiracy. Team Cherry co-director William Pellen’s cryptic Twitter/X activity has sparked rampant speculation, connecting everything from an image of a chocolate cake to the rumored launch of Nintendo’s next-generation console, the Switch 2.
On January 15, Pellen changed his Twitter/X profile picture to an image of a chocolate cake and cryptically tweeted, “something big is coming. “Keep your eyes closed tomorrow.” Fans were quick to speculate that this was a reference to Nintendo’s Switch 2 reveal, which was rumored to happen on January 16. Their suspicions were confirmed when Nintendo announced the console that same day.
The conspiracy deepened when fans performed a reverse search on the cake image, identifying it as a recipe for Bon Appétit’s Brooklyn Blackout Cake. It should be noted that the recipe was published on April 2, 2024, a date that coincides with the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct scheduled for April 2, 2025.
Additional speculation arose from Pellen’s updated Twitter account, @everydruidwaswr, and his new display name, “little bomey.” Redditors analyzed these changes and linked them to possible Silksong clues, such as a druid NPC in the game and the similarity to “Little Boomey,” a wine from South Australia, where Team Cherry is based.
Despite the creative investigation, Team Cherry’s head of marketing and publishing, Matthew ‘Leth’ Griffin, stepped in to quell the rumours. Popular Hollow Knight YouTuber fireb0rn revealed that Griffin had reached out to clarify the situation. “There was no Silksong ARG,” Griffin confirmed, adding: “The cake was a lie.”
On the Hollow Knight Discord server, Griffin praised fans’ detective skills, but reiterated that the Twitter activity was not part of a broader marketing campaign. When asked about Silksong’s progress, Griffin reassured fans: “Yes, the game is real, it’s progressing, and it will be released.”
Originally announced six years ago, Hollow Knight: Silksong has been confirmed for release on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. However, with so much time passing, fans are speculating that the game could be released as a timed exclusive for the Nintendo Switch 2.
