SA20 2025 – ‘It worked perfectly’ – Delano Potgieter on his five for bowling for the first time in SA20

All-rounder Delano Potgieter didn’t think he would be part of MI Cape Town’s (MICT) bowling attack on the opening day of SA20 2025. However, he was front and center with his seam bowling, helping his team deliver the two-time defending champions. “Sunrisers Eastern Cape a 97-run thrashing at Gqeberha”. That was partly because his “phenomenal captain”, Rashid Khan, backed him with the ball, a trust he repaid with five goals.

“Everyone has different plans, for different places and all that,” Potgieter said. “We have an incredible bowling schedule: KG [Rabada]Trent [Boult]boshy [Corbin Bosch]with George spinners [Linde] and rash [Rashid]. They bowl most of the overs. So there was no need for him to bowl. “And yeah, the captain threw the ball to me tonight and I was really happy about it, and it turned out perfect.”

Earlier in the day, Potgieter had scored an unbeaten 25 off 12 balls to lift MICT to 174 for 7. In the second half of the game, as the sixth bowler, he took 5 for 10 in three overs to give MICT their first win against Sunrisers in five exits.

“I looked at that statistic this morning, too,” Potgieter said. “It’s only the first game of the tournament, but it’s good to start with the victory.”

Before Thursday, Potgieter had 34 wickets in 64 T20 games. But this was the first time he bowled for MICT in 12 matches in three SA20 seasons.

“I couldn’t ask for a better day for it,” he said. “It happened very quickly. I was at the top of my mark and I just said, ‘I’m going to try to get to the top of the stumps,’ and luckily for me, it worked out perfectly.”
