South Africa chose bowl v India

Aiden Markam decided to hunt in South Africa’s first international home match of the summer, with a line-up full of versatile players. Both Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee were included in the XI for the first time in almost four months on their respective returns from injuries and conditioning blocks. Patrick Kruger, who played in both sides of the T20 World Cup, kept his place and South Africa included a fourth bowling all-rounder in debutant Andile Simelane. The occasion was very special for the 21-year-old, who plays local cricket in Durban.
South Africa also have the option of two specialist spinners – left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj and leg-spinner Nqabayomzi Peter – while Markram can also bowl. Markram’s regular opening partner, Reeza Hendricks, was ruled out due to illness.

India did a lot of spin with two leg-spinners in Varun Chakravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi, left-arm spinner Axar Patel, left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh and right-arm quick Avesh Khan. There was no place for all-rounder Ramandeep Singh. Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma could also bowl. Their batting was led by Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya, but ends with Axar at number 7.

Suryakumar was happy to bat first on a surface that should be suitable for big scoring in conditions where a full game should be played. Despite some gray clouds in the sky, a strong breeze should keep them moving and entertain the large crowd.
