Slegers is not an unknown face at Arsenal, both internally and externally.
In September 2023, he joined Arsenal as assistant coach to Eidevall and held the role for 13 months before making the move.
After Eidevall’s departure three months ago, Slegers transformed the Gunners from a team sitting in sixth place in the WSL after four games.
Since taking over on an interim basis, no team has scored more points in the WSL than the Gunners. Only league leaders and defending champions Chelsea have managed to emulate that form.
But despite the job change and the team’s fortunes, Williamson has praised Slegers’ modest personality.
“It’s difficult for someone to remain the same person in the way they act,” the defender added. “Renee is a good person and a strong woman, so I feel like she has a lot of authority in what she says anyway.
“The position she is in [in] Knowing a group of players as an assistant, you have that less pressurized relationship in terms of decision making, so being in that role, I think it puts you in a better position to make the decisions that a head coach requires because you know all. and you know the players.
“I haven’t seen her change so far, which is great, obviously, because it says a lot about her as a person.”
Slegers told the players about his new contract shortly before it was made public.
But instead of focusing on her own big news, she quickly turned the spotlight on Swedish defender Amanda Ilestedt, who was celebrating her 32nd birthday.
“We all found out today,” Williamson, 27, said. “She is a very humble and modest person, Renee.
“She was exceptionally uncomfortable and quickly moved on to the fact that it was Amanda’s birthday and we sang happy birthday and that ended the conversation.”
