McCabe is a lifelong Liverpool fan and says he is surprised by how well the Reds are doing under Arne Slot this season.
“It’s been incredible, we really can’t ask for much more,” he told BBC Sport. “So far we have only lost one game in 27 in all competitions.
“I don’t know what it is about Arne, but it seems to me that he doesn’t tolerate any nonsense. I think if someone asks him, he just looks them straight in the face, as if to say ‘just keep going’. Do it and do what I tell you.” .
“Anyway, that’s the vibe I get and it seems to be working.
“I went to Anfield earlier this season, for our win against Aston Villa in November. Darwin Nunez scored, so it was a strange game, and it was a very good goal too.
“When Núñez plays on the outside he always seems to score from an angle, because he can bend them. It’s when you put him in the middle, directly in front of the goal, that he just can’t finish. I don’t know why – Maybe his feet are shaped like 50p coins?”
Liverpool are six points ahead of second-placed Arsenal with a game in hand, but McCabe feels their lead is fragile.
“We’re only halfway through the season and I have to be honest, I can’t get too excited,” he added. “I did it at the beginning of December and we tied two games. [against Newcastle and Fulham].
“Although we were still five points clear, I suddenly felt that it would only take one more draw and the teams below us would be back there.
“My mother told me we would have to lose three games now to lose our lead and I said no, we don’t, we just have to draw a couple more for the gap to close again and for a bit of hesitation to settle.
“We are at the top, but now we have less pressure than Arsenal and I think they feel it more than us.
“Everyone I listened to predicted they would win the title this time after coming close in recent years, while we weren’t even seen as being in the top four because Jurgen Klopp was gone.
“That’s something I’m confident in now. I’m not going to say we’ll definitely win the title from here, no matter how good we look, but there’s no way we’ll miss out on fourth place!”
