It has been revealed that video game revenue in the UK fell 4.4% to £4.6bn in 2024.
This was mainly due to a collapse in physical games revenue in the region, with just £324.4 million generated from boxed game sales in the UK last year. That’s a drop of almost 35% from 2023.
This data is courtesy of the Entertainment Retailers Association and is based on data from Nielsen/GfK, India and GSD.
The digital market fared better, with £4.29 billion generated through game sales for consoles, PCs, mobile devices and tablets. However, this was still a 1% drop from the previous year.
According to the data, PC download sales decreased by 5%, console download sales decreased by 15%, mobile and tablet games increased by 2.6%, and subscription revenue increased by 12%. This means the video games market will fall behind film and video in the UK for the second year running.
The best-selling game in the UK was EA Sports FC 25, which sold 2.9 million copies in 2024. ERA reveals that 80% of its sales were made through digital stores.
“After skyrocketing growth in recent years, it’s no surprise that the games market has slowed, but it’s still a juggernaut,” said ERA boss Kim Bayley. “Despite the attractions that digital business models have for developers, we believe physical still has a role to play.”
The gaming market is expected to improve in 2025 with a series of major game releases, led by Grand Theft Auto VI and the successor to the Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo has yet to officially reveal its Switch successor, but the company has confirmed plans to do so during its current fiscal year, which ends in March 2025.
