In the post asking for “honest and legitimate […] comments for once,” Persson briefly explained what his dungeon crawler would entail, but then admitted, “but then I get to thinking that maybe there are people who like my work but maybe don’t share my taste for nostalgia retro and would prefer that I make a spiritual successor to Minecraft, and I’m sure they’d take that money.”

At the time of writing, nearly a quarter of a million of his followers have voted, 78 percent of whom, perhaps unsurprisingly, have been in favor of a new Minecraft game, despite had asked people to “[please] vote potion. You can do this Zoomers, it’s actually super cozy.
“It feels like Stardew Valley, but more diagonal door kicking,” Notch added.

A few days later, responding to commenters who missed his original post, Persson summarized what had happened by saying: “I basically announced Minecraft 2. I thought maybe people REALLY want me to make another game that’s super similar to the first one. and I love working on games again.
“I don’t care much exactly which game I make first (or even if I make more), but I do know I’m making one, so I thought I’d be absolutely willing to give it an honest chance in the future. a survey about it.
“My intentions are to be clear and honest about this, saying that spiritual successors tend to be kind of… you know… washed up. Tragic,” she added. “The things I fear my next game will be anyway and I try my best to avoid them. So why not do what people DO want and are willing to give me, somehow, even MORE cash?”
“I intend that the money [sic] I spent for good, but my God, I have learned that I fail a lot. Winning is failing until you succeed.”
Persson added that he had no non-compete clause in the sale of Minecraft to Microsoft: “there was a period of a year where I couldn’t make a game with modifiable terrain or something, but being in the Maldives during all that didn’t affect no creative decision,” but acknowledged that using the Minecraft name “would be super illegal.”
“Instead, I would make a new original game of the same type as Minecraft and call it something else,” he said. “Traditionally they are sometimes called ‘spiritual successors,’ but they usually feel a little flat.
“But if that’s really what people want, I would LOVE to make that game. It would be my Gremlins 2.”
Persson also said that as “a man of [his] word,” he intended “to do this in a way that in no way attempted to sneakily infringe on the amazing work that the Mojang team is doing and upon which Microsoft is successfully making Microsoft’s shit.”
“And I respect them for doing that. It’s their job. And they, from what I understand, let the studio do things their way, which I think is very fair,” he added.
It’s been a busy time for Minecraft. Late last year, the game finally received a native PlayStation 5 version, announced it was dropping VR support for PC, and confirmed plans to launch Minecraft theme park areas in the US and UK.
