Niko Kovac: Borussia Dortmund names former Bayern Munich manager as a chief coach

Borussia Dortmund has appointed former Bayern Munich manager Niko Kovac, as his new chief coach.

The Bundesliga club fired Nuri Sahin last week after his defeat in the Champions League in Bologna, which was his fourth successive defeat in all competitions.

Kovac, 53, has signed an 18 -month agreement and will take over after the Bundesliga match this weekend against Heidenheim.

“We have had intensive discussions with Niko Kovac in recent days and we have deliberately taken the time to meet and our expectations better,” said Dortmund’s managing director Lars Rickn.

“We are in a challenging sports situation and we are sure that in Niko we have found the coach who can master it.”

Kovac said: “All those responsible for BVB (Dortmund) gave us a very good feeling in conversations, so I am convinced that we can achieve a lot together in the future.”

Kovac’s appointment occurs after Dortmund sealed a play-off place in the Champions League.

The Germans ended tenth in the initial league phase thanks to a 3-1 victory against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Dortmund will face Belgian Club Brugge or Portuguese champions that look in the play-offs.

The new Kovac team is the 11th in the highest German category with seven wins of its 19 League games this season, 22 points behind the Bayern Munich leaders.
