Newcastle United and Aston Villa charged by FA for ‘half-time fight’

Newcastle United, Aston Villa and a member of staff from both clubs have been charged following an incident at half-time during the recent Premier League match between the teams.

The Magpies beat Villa 3-0 at St James’ Park on Boxing Day, with Villa striker Jhon Durán sent off in the 32nd minute for trampling Fabián Schar.

The FA charged both teams with failing to monitor their players and staff following a half-time altercation involving members of both teams.

Newcastle assistant coach Jason Tindall, who was sent off for his part in the altercation, as well as Villa analyst Victor Manas, have been accused of acting inappropriately.

Asked in his post-match press conference whether the incident could be described as a “20-man melee at half-time”, Newcastle manager Howe said: “Yeah, I don’t think it’s too far off.

“These things always start, I don’t think, with the intention of them happening the way they did.

“There were probably 17 or 18 people trying to calm him down, but it seems there are more people involved.”

Villa manager Unai Emery was furious at Durán’s sending off and his frustrations continued throughout the first half.

Tindall was later seen shushing Emery in the technical area.

The two clubs and the squad have until January 13 to respond to the accusations
