Berea, Ohio-the defensive wing Myles Garrett said Friday to sign a record extension with the Cleveland Browns, just a month after requesting an exchange, it was not about money, but feeling safer in the future of the team.
Garrett requested an exchange on February 3 after an end of 3-14 in Cleveland, his sixth loser year in eight NFL seasons, expressing his desire to play for a contant team. He led to a public dispute between Garrett and the only franchise he met since he was selected with the best selection in the 2017 NFL Draft.
But on Friday, he returned on board with a new extension that once again makes it the best paid quarterback in the NFL history. The sources told Adam Schefter of ESPN that the extension of four years averages $ 40 million per year and includes $ 123.5 million in guaranteed money.
Garrett said that additional conversations with team management changed their minds about wanting to be changed.
“Simply have constant communication with the team, with [GM Andrew Berry] … talking about the plans and future of this team and how we can turn this and turn Cleveland into a winner, “Garrett said.
During the confrontation of a month, Garrett conducted multiple interviews on Row Rad during the Super Bowl week, doubleing his desire to be changed. Throughout the process, Berry remained firm that he had no intention of trade with the defensive player of 2023.
Garrett said he does not regret having made his request public, since he allowed both parties to join in communication in the future of the franchise.
“I think I had a certain frustration,” Garrett said, “and I feel that it helped us grow and have conversations that were difficult, but that they should have and helped create a little more speech, helped build some relationships and reaffirm them. And now I feel that we are in a better place and now we can move on.
“I think fans will see that my heart is in the right place. It has never been money. It has always tried to win. That’s where my frustration is.”
While Garrett, a six times Pro Bowler and four times All-Pro Selection, is back in the Redile, one of his main concerns, the field marshal position, still does not resolve in Cleveland. The Browns have made only a movement for a field marshal this low season: trade by Kenny Pickett. The team received Russell Wilson on a visit on Thursday, and Garrett said he spoke with Wilson at the practice center.
“I definitely think it will be a valuable asset as a leader, as a mentor for young people, veteran leadership cannot be underestimated,” Garrett said. “And I think it definitely has some juice in position. He has a lot of arm, is very intelligent and knows what he is capable of. It would be a valuable asset.”
