PITTSBURGH — Although maestro Mike Tomlin remained silent on the Steelers’ initial quarterback plan for Sunday night, big receiver George Pickens reportedly showed that Russell Wilson will make his first start of the season against the New York Jets.
“Yeah, [we’ve been] being on the same page after practice, throwing more than usual because this is his first start,” Pickens said when asked if he had been running with Wilson’s spread throughout practice this time.
But at an event before Pickens’ interview, Tomlin declined to reveal anything more about the plan when asked if he was ever able to call a starter.
“I am, but I’ll keep it at home,” Tomlin said. “But I thought [Wilson] It was sharp. I thought Justin [Fields] It was also sharp. “I thought we had a very productive week from both guys and the unit as a whole.”
Wilson, 35, practiced hard for the second straight time after dealing with lingering calf shock. In the past, his teammates have shown that Wilson took first-team reps and also led the quarterback rotation in individual drills. Grounds, who was 4-2 before Wilson was sidelined, was second in the quarterback rotation during drills.
“Justin has been really good, and we’ve been really good at times, but we shouldn’t confuse that with great,” Tomlin said earlier this time. “This is a competitive league. We’re trying to position ourselves to be that team and we have a talented player who hasn’t had the opportunity to play, so potentially we’re going to explore those things that sometimes aren’t possible.” It necessarily has something to do with what Justin has or hasn’t done.”
When neither quarterback showed the plan for Sunday during their interviews on Thursday, Wilson stated that he was “preparing to be ready to play,” present. Grounds stated of his six starts that he did not play “good enough games, if I want.” being real with you.”
However, Grounds coaches and teammates praised the quarterback for his performance and said he was being too dry on himself.
“I think he did the best he could,” said Najee Harris, who is returning to work. “I think he did a really good job, and he shouldn’t, well, I know what he was trying to do, but I just said publicly that we’re all proud of him. Don’t be so hard on yourself. We’ve got your back.
“However, I think each of them was given 11 people to ring and be there. We would like either of them [the quarterbacks] excused is to say that.”
