Mexico will try to overcome a two-goal loss on Tuesday after hosting Honduras in the second leg of the Concacaf International League quarterfinals.

The regional heavyweight left Honduras with a miraculous 2-0 defeat on Friday, although it is not an unknown situation. Mexico also lost 2-0 in Honduras in the first leg of the International League semi-final of the extreme event, beating them at home by the same score in the second leg before advancing in the penalty shootout. The point of interest on Tuesday, however, won’t simply be seeing if El Tri can get out of this mess, but if they are able to show that they are on track to put together a solid performance, they are focused. in the 2026 International Cup.

Here’s what you need to know before you tune in.

Arguments

Concacaf’s three management teams made administrative adjustments this time in hopes of revamping their teams before hosting the International Cup in two years, and Mexico hired Javier Aguirre in July for his third turn in charge of the team. He stabilized the pace in his first four games, remaining undefeated when El Tri began to appear on the page of his pass to the United States Cup team level. The most important of these effects was a 2-0 victory over Mauricio Pochettino’s American team in October, after they outscored the USMNT despite a similarly contested match.

Mexico, however, overcame its first opponent on Friday in San Pedro Sula, failing to gain any real foothold as it lost 2-0 to Honduras. Even though they had 62% ownership, they were able to translate that into a huge advantage on offense: each side took 10 shots and were virtually even in shots on goal and expected goals. Since the objectives require travel, Mexico will need to increase the intensity of the attack, as it did against the USMNT, to get out of this hole. However, for a Mexican team that this time has overcome a goalless draw in six of its 13 games, this will not be a miniature game.

Prediction

Mexico may have its flaws, but it has enough ability to overcome a two-goal deficit and reach the semifinals of the International League for a fourth pace in the race. Their performance against the USMNT shows that Aguiree’s Mexico can take things to the next level, so expect them to do just that on Tuesday. Maybe they’ll do it temporarily first, though, it’s a unique story. Select: Mexico 2, Honduras 0 (2-2 in mix; Mexico travels due to consequences)
