Mark Robinson leaves Warwickshire as part of training reorganization

Mark Robinson has left his role as coach of the first Warwickshire team after the club made a restructuring of training and support personnel. It will be replaced on paper by former Warwickshire Iian Westwood batter.

Robinson was appointed in early 2021 and took Warwickshire to the county championship title in his first season. They ended eighth in 2022, avoiding the descent on the last day, and then the seventh last year, winning only once in the championship. They also lost in the quarterfinal stage of the four -seasons explosion.

Warwickshire executive director Stuart Cain said there had been a disappointment for the recent performance of male teams, but the club wanted to avoid “a knee response” to last season. After a high performance review, several changes have been made in the training structure, in part to reflect the advent of a professional women’s team and the continuous integration of Birmingham Phoenix.

In addition to that Westwood supervises the first team, Tony Frost has been appointed Chief of Operations of cricket after Keith Cook’s retreat, while Simon Kerrigan will become the second XI coach and offers rotating bowling support. Stuart Barnes remains bowling coach, and the club is looking for a new batting coach.

Laura Macleod will continue as a high -performance head for Bears Women, working with Ali Maiden, recently appointed boss coach of Bears Women and Birmingham Phoenix.

With Warwickshire retaining 51% of Phoenix’s majority owners of Gavin Larsen’s departure before Christmas.

“It is no secret that we have disappointed in the performance of our men in recent years,” said Cain. “We also wanted to proactively address the most important changes that the game has seen in a decade with the formation of a professional Bears team and the integration of Birmingham Phoenix in our elite configuration.

“It was important not to respond to the knee to last season. We allowed time for an exhaustive analysis of our high performance structure and we work with the Club cricket Audit Committee and the Board to create a new approach that recognizes the need To improve and also addresses the challenges created when administering a professional team to four, playing four different formats of cricket.

“Robbo has worked hard for the Bears since he joined in 2021 and we should not underestimate his achievement to win the County Championship in his first season. He is a quality coach and will be an asset for any club.

“However, taking into account the recent actions and comments of the review, we feel that it was time for change. Ian Westwood is a bear and through. Understand our history, culture and DNA. It is competitive, structured and a quality leader having been previously captain of the club and second coach of XI.

“The new Chief of Operations of cricket means that we have someone focused on executing the machine, making sure that everything from hotels and kit to WICKETS and the Interior Center. Keep the retirement of Keith Cook, which has provided such an incredible service to the club for more than 50 years.

“We are sure that this new structure gives us the skills, resources and approach necessary so that the teams of men and women get in a position to gain national tournaments, as well as develop the local talent of the many diverse communities that surround them Edgbaston “.

Robinson, who previously trained the women of England and Sussex, pointed out the success of the 2021 championship, as well as the recent elevation of Jacob Bethell and Dan Mousley to the duty of England completely during his time in charge.

He said: “There are many things that we have celebrated during my time as a bear, and the things we know could have gone better. Winning the championship was a great culminating point, just like supervising our T20 team of one that I was fighting to qualify to qualify.

“Losing the quarterfinals last year hurt badly, but I’m sure it won’t spend much before the children take the next step for cutlery.

“Seeing two children from the Academy, Bethell and Mousley, moving from the regular Bears players to make their debuts in England made everyone, myself, very proud.

“Finally, thanks to the followers who are the most important part of the club for your support. I know it will only be a matter of time before you get the success it deserves.”

Warwickshire also confirmed Thursday that they have received a planning permission from the Birmingham City Council for a remodeling of £ 42 million in Edgbaston that will include a new hotel in the place. The work is expected to begin in September and be completed before the ashes test for men 2027.

The new stand, which will see a slight increase in capacity, will also have a lobby with improved food and drink options, and improved facilities for disabled spectators.

Craig Flindall, Edgbaston strategy director, said: “We are grateful to the Birmingham City Council for passing the plans and for sharing our vision to provide greater economic and social benefits to the region through international sport.

cricket will always remain in the heart of our thinking. But it is important that we develop a stadium that operates throughout the year, supporting new jobs in this part of the city and creates broader community opportunities.

“We are creating a mixed use destination that will combine elite sport, conferences and events and residential and hotel accommodation with community facilities that improve education, employment and social cohesion in the area.”
