Pep Guardiola says he has asked the Manchester City hierarchy for a chance to improve the club’s form but will leave if he fails to do so.
Guardiola is going through the worst spell of his managerial career, with City losing five consecutive games in all competitions before conceding a three-goal lead to draw with Feyenoord in the Champions League in midweek.
Their cause has not been helped by a series of injuries to key players, including Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, who will miss the rest of the season.
Guardiola has won 18 trophies since moving to the Etihad Stadium in 2016, including six Premier League titles in seven years and the Champions League.
But the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach, who recently signed a new two-year contract, says that offers no guarantee he will remain in the job if results do not improve.
“I don’t want to stay in this place if I feel like I’m a problem,” he said. “I don’t want to stay here just because the contract is there.
“My president knows that. I told him, ‘Give me a chance to try to come back,’ and especially when everyone comes back.” [from injury] and see what happens.
“Then, if I’m not capable, we have to change because, of course, [the previous] Nine years are dead.
“More than ever I ask my hierarchy to give me the opportunity.
“Will it be easy for me now? No. I have the feeling that I still have work to do and I want to do it.”
