It’s been some time since Crystal Dynamics revealed their beloved, boring action fiction adventures Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 and 2 and they were eager to get their hands on the remastered solution. And now, with the December release of the two-game bundle approaching, remaster developer Aspyr is clear on some of the improvements the improvements will bring.

However, what we also get is confirmation of reshaping, retexturing and, in at least one case, thinning to strengthen the appearance of the boss roster, and that’s due to a “completely redesigned” style for protagonist Kain – important . to “mitigate texture problems.”
“With the increase in the number of polygons, we felt it was important to bring his appearance much closer to the Kain we saw in the original FMV, which was much more detailed and showed more or less what the original intention of the character was,” notes Aspyr. . “The original model in SR1 was especially limited so now both games have a Kain that seems consistent between the two titles.”
These updated looks were at least partially expected, of course, thanks to the announcement trailer for Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered, but Aspyr has now also shown off plenty of new alternative features. Both games now come with a map and compass, for example, which Aspr says “combines the conveniences of modern gaming with preserving the exploration experience the original titles were known for.”
The compass “gently nudges the player in the right direction without revealing specific details of where to go”, and the map is described as “more of a reference tool than a guide”. Additionally, there is a suite tracker that shows whether or not players have discovered all of the collectibles in each segment. But for long-time fans looking to enjoy a slightly more traditional Legacy of Kain experience, the remastered Soul Reaver 1 and 2 crosshairs can also be swapped out for the real thing, and the compass can also be expanded to turn off inside . the configuration menu.
Crystal Dynamics first hinted that it was considering a Legacy of Kain revival in 2022, when it surveyed fans asking if they would consider the series’ optical return.
