England has already been eliminated from the Champions Trophy, after they lost their first two group games against Australia and Afghanistan. They prepared for the tournament with a trip to India that saw them win only one of their eight games on the first tour of Brendon McCullum as a white ball coach.
“I’m going to stop as an England’s captain,” Buttler said. “It is the right decision for me and the right decision for the team. I hope someone else who can enter with Baz takes the team where it should be.” Harry Brook, the Vicecapitan of Buttler, is the first favorite to replace it.
Buttler will continue playing for England and said he wants to “really enjoy my cricket.” He said: “Primordial emotions are still sadness and disappointment. I am sure, over time, that will happen and I can really enjoy my cricket, and [will] He can also reflect on the immense honor that is to captain his country and all the special things that come with him. “
Buttler was appointed successor of Eoin Morgan in June 2022 and won the T20 World Cup in Australia later that year. But England’s results have declined sharply from and after three CPI events without success in a row: the 2023 50 World Cup on, the World Cup T20 2024 and the 2025 Champions Trophy: Buttler has decided to retire.
“It was quite clear that this tournament was going to be important: in terms of results and for my captaincy,” Buttler said. “Two losses and be out of the tournament [was] A little tournament hangover before. I just got to the end of the road to me and my captaincy, which is a shame and I am sad about that.
“With Brendon entering recently, I was really excited to work closely with him and wait for a very fast change and take the team forward. But it doesn’t work that way, so he feels like the right time for me and the team to have a change.”
Buttler’s position was under increasing scrutiny after a bad streak in Odi for England that extends towards the beginning of the 2023 World Cup. In defense of its World Cup title, England won only three group games of nine and was the first team to be officially eliminated from the tournament. A race began that has seen them lose 18 of the last 25 ODI, including the two that put their Champions Trophy campaign in the first obstacle.
Brook has the tip to happen, although McCullum said that England had not yet decided by a candidate. He praised Buttler’s leadership as he said he was “incredibly sad” when he saw him give up.
“We have all seen in recent years how much he has invested in capturing his country and trying to get the best of those guys around him,” McCullum said. “People forget that he literally won a World Cup only a couple of years ago, and that can never be removed.
