Jen Beattie: Former Scotland and Arsenal defender announces retirement

Beattie won four league titles with Arsenal and one with Manchester City during his time in England.

He also played for French club Montpellier and had a loan spell in Australia with Melbourne City before moving to the United States in 2024.

He now follows in the footsteps of his father John, a successful broadcaster and former Scotland rugby player.

“I loved working with different broadcasters and covering women’s football,” Beattie said.

“I grew up watching my dad do it in rugby and always thought he was great.

“It’s amazing the coverage that women’s soccer receives now and I want to be a part of that. It keeps you close to soccer. It’s also the adrenaline of that live.” [sport].

“You feel like your heart is beating right before. I think that’s the closest I’ll ever get to playing 90 minutes of soccer in front of a sold-out crowd.”

Beattie’s football journey has not been easy after receiving a breast cancer diagnosis in October 2020.

He scored for Arsenal in a 5-0 win over Brighton three days later and recovered from cancer after undergoing radiotherapy.

Since then, she has advocated for cancer research and awareness and won the BBC’s Helen Rollason Sports Personality of the Year Award in 2021.

“It definitely changed a lot of parts of my career. But it made me enjoy it even more because I had been through something very difficult,” Beattie said.

“It brought me closer to my teammates, made me value my work even more and made me work for something more than football.

“I will never regret talking about it and being as honest as I could, and to this day I find it really important to share things that are really difficult.

“It made me understand the bigger picture of football: it’s not everything. What really matters is health, happiness, friends and family.”
