James Tavernier: Captain ready for the 500th Rangers game

The appearances and objectives continued in the next two seasons.

And in March 2024, a goal against Hibernian said that Tavernier became the defendant of the greatest score in the history of British professional football.

But later that year, and this season, questions began to ask among some sections of support on their commitment to the club and its form.

He was linked to a move, with former manager Gerrard allegedly interested in a meeting in Saudi Arabia when the former Liverpool captain was in charge of Al-Ettifaq.

That talk increased when the Belgian Clement replaced it shortly after the time in the semifinal of the League Cup this season against Motherwell.

Although the manager refused to be attracted to his reasoning, three days later Tavernier was withdrawn by the draw of the Europa League against Olympiakos.

The captain faced his critics, saying: “I know the position I am in. I’m on the first line, so I’m going to receive criticism, but I can take it completely.”

But, with Clemente missing, while Tavernier approaches his emblematic 500 appearance, he has been supported by another manager, with the interim chief Barry Ferguson confirming that he is still a large part of his plans.

That should ensure that he stays without Saturday against Motherwell for his half millennium of appearances.

And if he notes at the Ibrox match, it will be the goal of the 102A League of his career.
