It seems that Warner Bros. is trying to bring back as much of the original cast as possible for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, as they are now after Viggo Mortensen.
In September, it was reported that Warner Bros. was looking to have Ian McKellen return to his classic role as Gandalf for the upcoming The Hunt for Gollum. While it’s still unclear whether he’s signed on or not (the script isn’t completely ready yet), McKellen isn’t the only classic Lord of the Rings actor they’re hoping to add to the cast. Speaking to The Playlist, Lord of the Rings writer Philippa Boyens shared that The Hunt for Gollum will feature fan-favorite character Aragorn quite prominently, and that she, along with Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, they really hope Viggo Mortensen reprise his role once again. The big question now is whether he will agree or not.
“Honestly, that will be completely up to Viggo, collaboratively, and we’re at a very early stage,” Boyens said. “I’ve spoken to Viggo, Andy. [Serkis] has spoken with him, Pedro [Jackson] He’s talked to him, we’ve all talked to each other, and I honestly can’t imagine anyone else playing Aragorn, but it’s going to be completely up to Viggo. I know Andy wants to work with him, but we don’t see this as using AI either. [technology]”It’s a digital makeup, and whether or not Viggo does it depends entirely on how good the script is.”
Boyens noted that Mortensen doesn’t actually have a script yet, and admitted that they first need to see if they write a good enough role for him, and then if the actor can “find enough in it to see that it’s the performance he wants.” take on.” Don’t worry, though, because even if Mortensen doesn’t take on the role, they’d still want him to be heavily involved: “How do we deliver this character? The film will not be a sequel or prequel, but will take place parallel to the events of The Fellowship of the Ring, the story that begins after Bilbo’s birthday party, but before the Mines of Moria. It also won’t be two movies, as previously reported, but one, and that other movie will be a completely separate project from The Lord of the Rings. Basically, Lord of the Rings fans will be eating well… in a few years.
