New Orleans – The Saints are hiring former Los Angeles Chargers chief coach, Brandon Staley as their defensive coordinator, sources told Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.
Staley will be the third employee of the Saints Kellen Moore coach this week. The sources said that Saints are expected to hire the field marshal coach of the Eagles, Doug Nussmeier, to be their offensive coordinator. They offered the position of special team coordinator to Phil Galiano, who was previously an assistant coordinator of special teams of the Saints under Darren Rizzi.
Staley and Nussmeier have previous ties with Moore and have been considered potential objectives for vacant positions for several weeks.
Moore was the offensive coordinator of the Eagles last season, and he and Nussmeier helped the team win the Super Bowl Lix against the Kansas City Chiefs on February 9. The Eagles Campo Marshal, Jalen Hurts, was appointed MVP of the Super Bowl.
Nussmeier was an assistant coach under Moore when he was the offensive coordinator of the 2019 Dallas Cowboys to 2022 and during his only season with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023.
Staley, 42, was the chief coach of the Chargers from 2021 to 2023 and hired Moore to be his offensive coordinator in his last season. He and the general manager of the Chargers, Tom Telesco, were fired on December 15, 2023, after a start of the season 5-9 and a defeat by 63-21 against the Raiders of Las Vegas.
Staley spent the 2024 season as an assistant chief coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Before his period with the Chargers, he was the defensive coordinator of Los Angeles Rams in 2020. The Rams led the league in scoring defense and total defense that season, ending 10-6 before losing in the division round of the NFC playoffs .
