Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi has said that the development team originally wanted to release episodic story DLC for the game, but ultimately decided against it.
Following the release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake in 2020, an enhanced version was released for PS5 and PC called Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade which included a new DLC expansion titled Episode Intermission.
Last week it was announced that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which launched for PS5 in February 2024, will be coming to PC in January.
In an interview with Epic Games, Hamaguchi reiterated that the game‘s story DLC will not be released because Square Enix chose to prioritize development of the third and final entry in its Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy.
“We had a desire to add an episodic story as new DLC to the PC version,” he said, but limited resources meant that finishing the next game in the project as quickly as possible was the “top priority.”
“However,” Hamaguchi added, “if we receive firm requests from players after launch regarding certain matters, we would like to consider them.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Hamaguchi asked that players refrain from installing or creating offensive or inappropriate PC mods.
“While the team has no plans to provide official support for mods in the game, we respect the creativity of the modding community and welcome their creations, although we ask modders not to create or install anything offensive or inappropriate” .
