FC Copenhagen – Hearts: What can the Scottish team expect?

Copenhagen’s strength, without a doubt, is their attack, having only failed to score twice in their 30 games this season.

Former Celtic striker Mohamed Elyounoussi is the standout, scoring nine goals and assisting another nine so far this season, leading to him being named Super League’s best player for the first half of the campaign.

Brazilian teenager Robert Silva is also quick and evasive on the left, while experienced striker Andreas Cornelius acts as a focal point.

They also have plenty of experience in midfield: former Borussia Dortmund player Thomas Delaney and captain Viktor Claesson have more than 150 caps between them for Denmark and Sweden respectively.

Especially with the backing of a rowdy home crowd at the 38,000-capacity Parken stadium, Copenhagen will look to overtake Hearts and dominate.

However, defensively they are vulnerable. They have kept a clean sheet in their last 14 games and there is a feeling that their individual quality is generating results more than team cohesion.

They do not defend aggressively, meaning they can be exploited with balls in their area, and the goals they conceded against Basaksehir and Minsk in particular were due to individual errors.

The back four have also been repeatedly caught with back balls throughout their Conference League campaign.

Lawrence Shankland scored twice against Dundee to end a 12-match goal drought, which will do his confidence a world of good.

But it is less clear whether a team that averages just over a goal per game in the Scottish Premiership has the tools to exploit Copenhagen’s vulnerabilities.

Hearts fans will have a full stand behind one of the Parken stadium goals, including a Michelin-starred restaurant on the eighth floor, as around 3,000 prepare to make the journey from Edinburgh.

It will take Hearts’ best performance in a shaky season to ensure their supporters can dine on this adventure for years to come.
