The clash between two of Europe’s biggest footballing countries is often an indicator of where the Lionesses should improve ahead of the summer.
It has no longer been smooth sailing since their fate at the Euro, with sadness in the Women’s Country League and missing out on Olympic qualification.
However, they reached the final of the Women’s International Cup in 2023 and won the first Women’s Finalissima a few months earlier.
But there were increasing complaints about England’s performance, which has fallen from the 2022 highs.
“We always want [progress] faster, but I think the game has increased, the level of international football leagues has increased and developed,” Wiegman mentioned.
“That’s what we want, so that means we have to develop as well. There is competition in the team, with other players coming in, and the more experienced players have to help the younger players so that we are all on the same page.
“We just know where we need to be in July.”
Germany has a new management: Christian Wuck, who took charge of the team after reaching the semifinals of the Paris Olympics.
He said “each country has clearly moved forward” since the Euro 2022 final and has “benefited” from the progression of their domestic leagues.
“Germany has always been a formidable team, very physical and wants to play proprietary games but also does not hesitate to play long games,” added England coach Wiegman.
“Now they have a new mentor, so they will probably do some alternative things as well and that’s a problem for us, a nice problem.”
“We don’t know exactly what they’ll do, but we’re prepared for anything. It’s really good for us to have that experience at the highest level.”
