Philadelphia 76ers said Friday that star Joel Embiid will miss the rest of the regular season while he and the team continue to look for a long -term solution for a problematic left knee that has affected his season.
Embiid had increased the swelling in the knee after a defeat against the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday night and underwent a new round of images on Monday to determine why his knee has not responded well to the treatment protocols that he has received this season. The 76ers and Embiid consulted with dozens of doctors and specialists to determine the best way forward for 7 feet.
The whole season, Embiid has tried to play through knee pain, hoping that he would improve as he put in better conditions. He received numerous injections, the sources said, hoping to reduce swelling and discomfort enough to allow him to play and be available for 76ers.
Instead of improving, pain and swelling have increased. In recent weeks, that has demonstrated in the performance of EMBIID and the team. However, there were also stretching when teammates and coaches would see Embiid play well in the practices and then sit in the next games, the sources said. His daily state seemed fluid throughout the season, and led to frustration between all parties.
Embiid played only 39 games last season after tearing the meniscus on his knee. He underwent surgery in early February, returned at the beginning of April, was part of the 76ers playoff career and won a gold medal with the United States Olympic team during the summer. He recognized earlier this month that he did not have enough time to recover after surgery.
The 76ers, which opened with the hopes of championship, have lost nine consecutive games and 11 of their last 12 competitions, falling to 20-38 in the middle of a disastrous season married to injuries. Even when Embiid, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey play, Philadelphia is only 7-8.
The recent 76ers skate has been significant for the franchise in a potentially good way; Philadelphia has broken a tie with Brooklyn and has exclusive possession of the sixth record in the NBA. The first round of the 76ers in this year’s draft is protected among the first six; Otherwise, it goes to Oklahoma City Thunder.
Later, on Friday, the 76ers agreed to a bidirectional contract of the NBA with the former first round of Los Angeles Lakers Jalen Hood-Schifino, according to the sources.
Throughout this cross season, Embiid could never remain on the court for a sustained period of time. Embiid played in just 19 games, which means that 39 has been lost.
In Saturday’s defeat, Embiid took to get up at the end of the third quarter when he lost the ball and hit the court. It was sent to the bank in the room after scoring only 14 points in 31 minutes and the six attempts of 3 points were lost. In his last two games this season, the tension of the injury was remarkable since Embiid scored 15 or less points in consecutive competitions for the first time since May 2021.
Embiid, the NBA MVP 2022-23, was selected as an All-Star in each of its last seven seasons before it. This season, the 30-year-old has had one of his worst results: his lowest score average since 2017-18 (23.8 points); his lowest rebounds per game (8.2) since his rookie year 2016-17; and professional minimums in blocks per game (0.9), field goal shots (44.4%), 3 -point shots (29.9%), percentage of effective field goal (48.1%) and desire for actions (1.5).
The 2024-25 regular season of the 76ers began with an investigation of the League on the player’s participation policy, which finally resulted in a fine of $ 100,000 for the public comments of the organization of President Daryl Morey and coach Nick Nurse who did not properly reflect Embiid’s health problems with his knee. The NBA also issued a suspension of three games to Embiid in early November for pushing a columnist in the locker room after a game in Philadelphia.
The situation around Embiid made it difficult for Sixers to form any type of identity, with George’s missing periods of time, also with injuries to groin, knee and fingers. George has needed treatment to navigate his injuries, with sources that say he received injections that kill the pain for four to five consecutive games before the rest of the stars.
