Elden Ring Nightreign is removing one of the Souls series’ most beloved features, as the developer believes players won’t have enough time to interact with the mechanics.
Elden Ring Nightreign players will not be able to leave messages for players or read messages left by other players. Dating back to Demon’s Souls, this feature allowed players to point the way to hidden treasure, drop crude jokes, or trick players into jumping off ledges.
Speaking to IGN Japan, director Junya Ishizaki said: “You can still see other players’ ghosts, but the ability to leave messages has been removed. The reason we removed the messaging feature is that in this game, where each session lasts approximately 40 minutes, there is no time to write your own message or read messages written by others.”
Another significant change is that currently, according to the developers, enemies defeated in battle will not respawn when the player rests at a Site of Grace. In the Souls games, players trade the ability to heal and save their game at certain checkpoints for the downside of all minor enemies respawning.
Announced on stage at The game Awards in December, Elden Ring: Nightreign will allow multiple players to take on bosses in cooperative gameplay.
A network test for Elden Ring: Nightreign will take place in February.
This summer, Miyazaki said there was outside interest in making an adaptation of Elden Ring, possibly a movie.
