EFL preview: Lampard and Rooney lead Boxing Day bonanza

With all due respect to the rest of the division, a couple of games jump off the page in League Two and affect both ends of the table.

Walsall against Doncaster Rovers is first against third and with an unbeaten league run of 11 games, including four straight wins, the Saddlers will have to pause a bit.

Nathan Lowe’s 10 league goals have drawn many admiring glances towards the on-loan Stoke striker and it is a concern for Walsall fans.

Given the form of his parent club, it would not be a surprise if Lowe was recalled in January and found himself embroiled in a relegation battle from the Championship.

Doncaster were knocked out of the play-offs last season after a record-breaking run to reach post-season contention.

Looking to go up this year, they are living up to expectations, although just two wins in the last seven games have found them stuttering more recently.

It will hardly be a relaxing Christmas Day for those participating in Carlisle United and Morecambe as the EFL’s bottom two clash as they desperately try to avoid slipping through the trapdoor into the National League.

Normally you’ll find managers trying to downplay a one-off game, but Carlisle boss Mike Williamson is almost making light of it.

“I don’t need to quantify this game, it’s huge,” Williamson told BBC Radio Cumbria.

Cumbrians know the pain of relegation from the EFL having experienced it in 2004, while Morecambe are only in their 18th season after winning the play-offs in 2007.

It may be hard to find festive cheer for the losers at Brunton Park, so it’s probably best to wish everyone a Merry Christmas now!
