Did you like Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s stylish 3D end credits? The person behind them offers a rare look at how this underrated art form was made.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has some fun and stylish credits, and now the person who created them has shared how he did it.

The credits are arguably one of the most important parts of a film, primarily because it is an important step in acknowledging the work that went into making the film, but they are also the last thing you see. You want to leave with a good grade! Sometimes that means keeping them simple, other times you want to do a little more, which is exactly what the three Sonic movies have done. The first two, unsurprisingly, went for the classic pixel art look, but for Sonic 3, he finally went the 3D route. Instead of being based on Sonic Adventure, as the film’s story is, they are actually based on the fighting game Sonic the Fighters, the first 3D entry in the series.

They’re a fun set of credits, and in a fairly lengthy YouTube video, the person who made them, SuitNtie22, explained how he made them. Personally the most interesting part of the video is specifically how the models were made. For the most part, the Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles models were just the original Sonic the Fighter models with some minor tweaks: Sonic has completely blue arms, unlike his tan arms in all the games, for example, and all of his proportions. They were also changed slightly.

The credits also required the creation of some unique Robotnik models for both Ivo and Gerald. These are based on his look from the movie, rather than the classic, stocky Eggman from the Sonic the Fighters era, but they blend in quite naturally. However, most interesting of all is Shadow’s model. Being a character from Adventure 2, Shadow does not have a “classic” look like Sonic, and one of the key features of that design is his round belly. But you’ll see in the credits that Shadow’s model has that round torso, which technically makes it the first instance of a classic Shadow in any Sonic media. Fun stuff (even if it’s mostly fun for Sonic nerds like you and me)!

Sonic 3 has proven to be a huge success, bringing the film franchise to a billion dollar total. A fourth film had already been greenlit anyway, but you can clearly see that these adaptations are here to stay.
