Darwin is on the verge of organizing international Crick for the first time in 17 years, with the Australian Crick to Penciling in two T20 against South Africa in August.
Officials are expected to announce dates for the winter series at the end of this month, with South Africa ready to travel three T20i and so many hate. It is understood that the tentative plan is that Darwin is the host of the first two T20i, before a T20i and Odi are played in Cairns and the two final hate are carried out in Mackay.
Local officials hope that parties can be locked.
“I have been clear from the moment I arrived in 2023 that we are driven to carry the international cricket to return to the northern territory,” said the CEO of NT cricket, Gavin Dovey. “The last time we organized the International cricket was 2008 and that is simply too long.
“The game has changed a lot since then. Just look at the recent Border-Gavaskar trophy or his return to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles 2028 for an example of their power and scale.”
The games would also mark the first male T20is played in the northern territory, with 107 played in Australia to date. In time since Darwin organized an international for the last time, 536 male and female games in all formats have played in Australia in 27 different places.
Darwin has made significant movements in the winter window in recent years, with the growth of the upper T20 League to include multiple BBL franchises and sides abroad. The August window also has the potential to be more attractive to the International cricket in the coming years, with a series of two tests against Bangladesh that will be transferred to the period in 2026.
The north of Queensland was expected to be the host at least one of those tests, but Darwin could be an option for another. The white ball cryket in the window during future cycles could also help order the summer and not guarantee the shock with the BBL.
“We have an incredible winter cricket window that offers huge benefits for both Australian cryket and northern territory,” said Dovey. “We know that cricket Australia is interested in taking advantage of that.
“We also know that the Government of NT sees the economic value offered by a global sport such as cricket, as well as the positive impact that Crick’s international superstars here on the field can have to inspire the community. Hopefully we can make this happen. It would be surprising to think that we could start the international summer of Crick here in Darwin.”
