Darkest Dungeon 2’s free Kingdoms mode gets release date alongside upcoming paid DLC

Darkest Dungeon 2 is getting a major free update in January, along with its upcoming paid DLC.

Both the new Kingdoms game mode and the Inhuman Bondage DLC will launch for PC on January 27, 2025.

Kingdoms is intended to run parallel to the game‘s main narrative campaign, Confessions. It requires players to travel from inn to inn across a persistent map to complete quests before time runs out.

At the same time, players must defend themselves against new enemy factions while completing bounties, upgrading and protecting inns. The first of these three factions will be the “rotten and voracious beastmen.”

Kingdoms mode was first revealed back in April of this year, but now it finally has a release date.

Meanwhile, the Inhuman Bondage DLC will introduce a new mini-region, The Catacombs, along with a new playable hero. In The Catacombs, players will face a “corrosive, oozing threat” beneath the Kingdom. It has new enemies and elements, and can be played in both Confessions mode and Kingdoms mode.

The new fan-favorite hero, The Abomination, was a Kickstarter-backed original designed character, coming with a fully voiced origin story along with unique mechanics and items.

“At Red Hook we love to go against the grain,” said creative director Chris Bourassa. “When we asked ourselves how best to expand Darkest Dungeon 2, we were baffled by the conventional wisdom of simply including more content. Instead, we endeavored to reimagine the very structure of DDII, and from that thought experiment was born a completely new game. mode: Kingdoms.”

Darkest Dungeon 2 is available for PC on Steam and Epic Games Store, along with PS4, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S. The console versions of the free update and DLC will follow the PC ones.

The game was first released in May 2023 and Red Hook has continued to modify and update it since then.

“A copious and often brilliant, if not unmissable, reworking of a powerfully dark fantasy,” reads our Darkest Dungeon 2 review.
