Colts releases Matt Gay’s kicking two years after giving him a big problem

Indianapolis-Los Colts spent Thursday of the kicker Matt Gay, launching the highly paid veteran two years in a four-year contract.

Gay arrived in Indianapolis in 2023 as a free agent for a lot of fanfare after winning a Super Bowl and doing a Pro Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams. The colts attracted him to Indianapolis with a four -year agreement worth $ 22.5 million, at the time the most lucrative contract granted to a free agent. But the movement was never worth the colts, with Gay turning only 82.1% of its field goal attempts (64 of 78) during the last two seasons, including a shocking 50% success rate in 50 yard or more attempts (11 of 22).

Before his time with the Colts, Gay converted 17 of 50 attempts of 50 yards and beyond (74%), including 12 of 15 in three years with the Rams.

Gay, 31, fought against injuries sometimes during the last two seasons, including a hernia that required surgery during the 2024 preseason. Gay returned in week 2 and said that his health was not a factor in his struggles.

“Kicking is very, very mental,” Gay said. “I have been very good from more than 50 years in my career, and I have full confidence in the future that I can make these kicks. I have shown that I can do that.”

At the same time, the colts seemed to echo that trust in homosexuals. Coach Shane Steichen repeatedly asked about his kicker, stayed with him.

“Matt is our kicking,” he said in October. “He has been doing it for a long time … he knows he has to make them move forward, but it’s our kicking.”

The Colts signed the kicking Spencer Shrader last month. It was 5 of 5 in field goal attempts during its rookie season in 2024, spending time with three teams, including colts.

The colts have found a challenge to find a kick since he enjoyed 14 seasons with the three-time All-Pro Adam Vinatieri kicking. The last time he kicked for the team in 2019, and Indianapolis has traveled numerous kickers in the intermediate seasons.

A fifth round of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019, Gay has a professional success rate of 85.5% in the field goal attempts (165 of 193) and 96.3% in PAT attempts (206 of 214).
