KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said he sees the fight to bring a WNBA franchise to Kansas Town as the next logical step for the NWSL’s Kansas Town Stream possession team.
“We want to bring basketball to Kansas City in general and then to the WNBA. The success they’ve had this past season and these past few seasons is a no-brainer,” said Mahomes, who along with his wife, Brittany, is an investor in Current. “Fighting for a WNBA team in Kansas Town to reach this pool of fans, you notice if you talk about the University of Kansas basketball, the Chiefs or whatever, the city of Kansas Town is going to get back out there and That’s why they are moving to fill the stadium.
“It was great that we were able to have this soccer team, this women’s soccer team here in the Current and now they’re getting into the playoffs and you see the support they have. So let’s try to get a WNBA team here too. [with] that same ownership group. “They have done the Current the right way and I want to continue working with them to take the next step and have a WNBA team here.”

Mahomes also owns a share of the Kansas City Royals and Sporting Kansas City (MLS).
“Kansas Town is kind of an admirable park to me,” Mahomes said. “It’s a place I call home. It’s a place where I built a house and will be for a long, long time. I think being involved in the community as much as possible. [is important] and I love sports. I know how much the city loves sports, so let’s bring as many sports here and show how great Kansas City is, not only as a city, but also to the people who live in it.
“We feel Kansas Town is a wonderful park to continue that expansion, but we have to fight with other cities to figure out why we can maintain and present an admirable franchise here.”
Mahomes said he wants to be a professional sports owner when he’s done playing football, and that his plans include women’s sports.
“I know how much the sport has given me,” Mahomes said. “Every time I participate in football, every time, I have to challenge the week closest to football.” and chasing kids and all that, I wish you could still be a part of it. … And the closest thing, the same day, show my daughter that she will be able to put her dream into practice and progress in the market and move forward whatever that dream is.
“I have met alternative sports players and women that I have been around more or less, including my wife, and found that they did not understand one of the similar problems that they gave me, to the extent possible. resources and amenities and things like that. So, I want to give them those same resources, those same comforts… I need to continue working in women’s sports as much as I can.’
