The SPFL said that while “it was fantastic to have over 80,000 fans attend” the League Cup semi-finals, “the large-scale, organized and illegal pyrotechnic displays carried out by a small minority of fans before the Celtic match -Aberdeen and the Motherwell-Rangers matches were totally unacceptable.”
The governing body said in a statement: “This irresponsible behavior caused significant inconvenience to thousands of fans at the game and supporters watching around the world.
“The SPFL, the Scottish Football Association, Police Scotland and other organizations have made it clear that such use of pyrotechnics is illegal and poses clear dangers and risks to the health and safety of fans, players and those working in the matches.
“There have been a number of fan complaints about these incidents and the SPFL and Scottish FA have been in discussions with the clubs involved in the weeks following the semi-finals.”
Celtic will face Rangers in the League Cup final at the national stadium on December 15, when the stadium is expected to be full.
“The SPFL and the Scottish Football Association will continue to work closely with the finalists in the preparation of this great occasion to reinforce the importance of ensuring a safe and enjoyable match day experience for all fans, in the context of what is now an ongoing disciplinary process,” the SPFL added.
