Brighton Paul Barber CEO at the Women’s Stadium and launch security

Limited women’s professional leagues (WPLL) are currently proposing several changes in the structure of women’s game with the aim of helping to cultivate it.

Clubs will be asked to discuss and vote on any proposal in their quarterly shareholders meetings; A possible change would be the temporary scrapping of the descent of the female super league.

Barber says that it is not something that Brighton’s board has approached, but welcomes the proposals for change.

“I think it is correct that the WPLL is looking at each road to accelerate the growth of the female game,” said Barber.

“If that means we need to give the owners more security to invest faster, we have to consider that. I do not say it is correct or incorrect, but only we need to have each argument on the table.”

Barber said WSL clubs “understand” that they will endure financial losses for a period of time as they invest in women’s football, but added that they should seek to make it sustainable.

“The most important thing is that we are investing in the right things to change that position in a not so distant future because we cannot simply execute women’s football clubs with losses forever,” he added.

“That does not make any sense for anyone and is not healthy for applicants to future female athletes who want to enter an environment, be paid properly and take care of themselves.

“We have to create a business that is sustainable for the future.”

When asked if he would welcome the regulations of financial real estate games in the WSL, Barber added: “I think it is a balance of not limiting investment, but at the same time it does not accelerate losses. It is very difficult.

“The key is to learn as many lessons as we can of the male game so as not to take football clubs to more precautionary positions.

“I would expect in the new governance bill, which eventually will be more parameters about spending [in the WSL]”
