BCB will launch Bangladesh Women’s Premier League (WBPL) for the first time; It is likely to be held shortly after the current men’s competition ends on February 7. According to BCB director Nazmul Abedeen Fahim, it will be a three-team competition, with each team playing the others twice for a total of six league matches. followed by the final.
“The board has been thinking about the various ways we can take women’s cricket forward,” Fahim said. “We thought about whether we can do a T20 competition for women. Today we have decided that we will do the women’s BPL.”
Fahim said the BCB is in talks with some of the men’s BPL franchises about ownership of the women’s teams, and a couple of owners have shown interest.
“We have already spoken to some BPL franchises who have shown interest [in owning women’s teams]” he said. “We want to see how a women’s tournament has an effect on our T20 cricket. “We’re hoping it will help our women’s game progress.”
Fahim said only one foreign player will be allowed in the XI, and teams will have a maximum of 15 players each.
“We will not accept many foreign players due to financial constraints,” he said. “Four foreign players put financial pressure on the teams; maybe they don’t want to take that pressure. We want to give more opportunities to our domestic cricketers. We want to add competitiveness.”
It will be the first women’s T20 tournament to be held in Bangladesh. The country’s women’s cricketers play the one-day league in Dhaka, and the BCB recently launched a three-day women’s competition.
