AUS vs IND: Shubman Gill suffers injury scare a week before Perth Test
Questions over India’s batting order for the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Perth increased after Shubman Gill injured his left thumb on the second day of India’s intra-team training match at the WACA.

He was injured while playing in the slips and left the field never to return. It could not be confirmed whether the injury will affect Gill’s selection for the first Test, which begins on November 22 at Optus Stadium in Perth.

Gill has been batting at number 3 but has also been lined up as an option for the opening slot alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal in case Rohit Sharma is not available for the first Test due to the birth of his second child.

While awaiting a proper assessment of Gill’s injury, the Indian camp received the good news that Rohit’s wife Ritika Sajdeh had given birth to their second child on Friday. With the deadline for the Perth Test approaching, Rohit had informed the BCCI and the selectors that he might not be available for the first match of the series.

In the wake of India’s recent 3-0 defeat against New Zealand, it emerged that Rohit even considered traveling to Australia to train with the team and returning to attend the birth of his son.

It could not be confirmed whether he will now travel to Perth and be available for the first test.

Another opening option, KL Rahul, left the field during the first day of the simulation match after being hit on the elbow by a short ball. He did not come out to bat later in the day as India’s top batsmen had another turn at the crease. Rahul also did not take the field on Saturday.

Gill, who batted twice on Friday, made 28 in his first over before being caught in the gully by Navdeep Saini’s backward delivery. He posted an unbeaten 42 upon his return to the area.
