Nearly two years after it was shown to be in the works, Amazon’s live-action TV adaptation of Sony Santa Monica’s God of War design is being revamped after the companies involved decided on a “different creative direction.”
That’s according to Deadline, which reports that showrunner and executive producer Rafe Judkins (who also serves as showrunner on Amazon’s The Wheel of Past adaptation) has now left the God of War project, along with executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus.
Deadline says the trio had already completed “multiple scripts” for the first season of God of War, scripts that were reportedly “praised” by Sony and top executives, but appear to now be scrapped as the companies look for a ” another perspective.” creative direction.” Regardless of the change, Deadline resources say the TV project remains a “major asset” for High, and Sony and Amazon are now looking to lease a “brand new writers’ room” for the design.
When Amazon initially announced its God of War adaptation in December 2022, it explained that it would follow Kratos’ “dangerous journey with his estranged son” to meet the needs of his wife’s death and “spread [her] ashes from the highest peak.” On the other hand, “Kratos soon realizes that the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one that will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to fight new gods and monsters for the destiny of the world.”
It’s unclear what Amazon and Sony’s unused “creative direction” for the design might be, but given that the actual sound used to be to make up the now-complete Norse saga of God of War, the decision may have been made to bring the design together into daily releases. For example, there have been rumors that Sony is looking to restore the actual God of War trilogy in some way, so the TV show could probably be looking to plant its flag in ancient Greece.
Regardless of the outcome, stories of a “do-over” suggest it will be a while before Amazon’s live-action God of War TV design hits the screen. Sooner rather than later, High has the second season (recently “ahead of schedule”) of its acclaimed Fallout adaptation in the works, and is also reportedly considering a Lump Impact skin in a week.
