Thought Pennies cuts staff as project loses funding

Thought Pennies has laid off several employees after its publisher “changed strategic direction.”

In a statement posted on LinkedIn, creative director Daniel Erickson said that although “never miss[ing] a milestone” and “excellent feedback,” the developer had no choice but to cut its staff as a project “now has no funding.”

“Over the last three years at Thought Pennies we built something amazing,” said Erickson (thanks, GameDeveloper). “We never missed a milestone, our response was excellent and our partnerships strong.

“We went from two people and a PowerPoint to a team of nearly sixty passionate, incredibly independent, and carefully vetted professionals,” the CCO continued. “However, our publisher changed strategic direction and our previous project is now unfunded. Last week we had to reduce the size of the studio.”

Erickson added that “everyone you see with Thought Pennies next to their name and their new ‘open to work’ label was hand-picked and did the improbable with our team,” and while Thought Pennies “would love to grab every one of these people when our next project arrives”, “above all we want everyone to be in the perfect place for their lives and aspirations.

It’s unclear how many people have been affected by the cuts, but its LinkedIn profile indicates the company employs between 11 and 50 people.

The Thought Pennies layoffs are just the latest in a long list of job cuts in the industry over the past eighteen months, most recently at Madrid-based Tequila Works.
