No triple espresso
The squad features fifteen players who were part of the 2024 Olympic squad, but will be without forwards Trinity Rodman, Mallory Swanson and Sophia Smith. The so-called “triple espresso” forward line was responsible for ten of the USWNT’s twelve Olympic goals. Smith and Swanson will begin their offseason rehabbing lingering injuries, while Rodman will play with his club team, Washington Spirit, in the NWSL Championship on Saturday, November 23.
“Let me be clear, none of these players want to miss a game to play for their country. So I want to be very clear about that… I want to make sure that these players are prepared for a long time to come. And when you’re at the end of a season and you play a lot, your body is tired, your mind is tired, that’s where sometimes it can get risky,” Hayes told the media about the decision to rest the attack. trio.
Their absences mean there will be even more opportunities to see rotations on different lines over the next few games. Players with fewer caps will earn extra minutes and young prospects will be able to demonstrate their offensive skills.
Another young squad with newer names
The youngest inclusion on the list is Lily Yohannes. The 17-year-old currently plays for AFC Ajax. Yohannes, who made her debut in June, is one of multiple players to earn their first cap under Hayes, with seven players recently earning their first cap for the USWNT during a single international window. The midfielder had options for her international career to represent the United States or the Netherlands.
“Getting Lily Yohannes’ commitment is huge for us, and I’m so grateful for everyone involved. From Lily to her dad to the federation. Everyone is showing the importance of having the right plan.” when someone like Lily is faced with such an interesting choice, but she has been very clear with me. I had a really good talk with her this week,” Hayes said of Yohannes representing the USWNT.
“May was such a nice year [camp] For her, she has been thinking about it ever since and is now looking forward to progressing her international career. “She knows she has to work hard with a snooker game as strong as she is, but I think she is an exceptional talent and I am delighted that we can develop a very young Lily Yohannes over the next few years to prepare her for a future with the national team.” .
For the winter series in Europe, Hayes intends to maintain some of the same staff rotation efforts. Players will be tested in their preferred positions and evaluated in different duos and trios.
Phallon Tullis-Joyce (Manchester United) and Ally Sentnor (Utah Royals FC) are two additional players who can earn their first minutes in the senior team.
