Nations League: Greek police criticized for ‘harsh’ treatment of English fans

Greek police have come under fire after it was claimed they used riot shields and tear gas to control England fans during the Nations League match against Greece in Athens.

The Football Supporters Association (FSA) is calling on fans to share their experiences of the situation that unfolded outside the Athens Olympic Stadium on Thursday.

After the match, which England won 3-0, the Football Association issued a statement saying it was aware of the problems and was obtaining more information about what happened.

Posting on X, externalFree Lions, the FSA’s fan embassy team, said there is “still a strong need” to ensure fans are not exposed to “unreasonably dangerous situations”.

Around 3,500 England fans traveled to the Greek capital to watch the sold-out match, but some fans complained of being “pushed” and given “harsh” treatment by local police.

“Even though we were told beforehand how things would work, to see the exact opposite happen in some cases, and to see our fans being treated by local police using shields and tear gas to do something as simple as rearranging a queue, is incredibly frustrating,” the FSA added.

The FSA said UEFA, European football’s governing body, has also been informed.
