Ecuadorian international Marco Angulo has died at the age of 22, just over a month after being seriously injured in a car accident, his club announced.
The LDU Quito midfielder had been hospitalized since the incident on October 7 in the south of Quito, the capital of Ecuador.
Reports in Ecuador, external He said he underwent several operations and spent more than a week in intensive care before passing away Monday night.
“With deep pain and sadness, we regret having to inform you of the passing of our beloved player Marco Angulo,” LDU Quito, which plays in Ecuador’s top flight, said in a statement Tuesday morning.
“We convey our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.
“His passing is an irreparable loss that will leave an indelible mark on our hearts.”
Angulo, a midfielder for MLS’ FC Cincinnati, joined LDU Quito on loan with an option to buy in March.
Angulo played 16 games for the club. His last appearance was on October 6, the day before the car accident.
Angulo made his debut for Ecuador in November 2022, coming on as a substitute in the 0-0 draw against Iraq and playing three international matches for his country.
“The Ecuadorian Football Association expresses its deepest condolences for the death of Marco Angulo,” reads a statement from the governing body.
“Marco was not only an exceptional player, but also a great teammate. He leaves a deep pain in our hearts, especially in those of us who accompanied him on countless trips, training camps and matches.
“Rest in peace, Angulito.”
According to Ecuadorian reports, Independiente del Valle soccer player Roberto Cabezas and a friend, Víctor Carcopa, also died in the accident.
There were two other passengers in the vehicle at the time. His condition is unknown.
