Paris Saint-Germain and Atlético de Madrid face each other at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday in the UEFA Champions League and both suffer in this phase of the league and are looking for a victory. Luis Enrique and Diego Simeone know all the options well even though this is the first competitive meeting between PSG and Atleti and the Spaniard has the threshold over his Argentine counterpart with nine wins to three. Now it may be a good life to extend that record with Les Parisiens. below expectations so far with four numbers out of a possible nine and the Spanish side averaging just one point depending on the game to occupy an elimination spot as things escalate.
PSG under Luis Enrique have six wins in 15 continental games for a win ratio of 40%, which is alarmingly low compared to other Paris bosses who have coached at least 10 UCL games with the French giants. Admittedly, this is a young team and certainly one of the untested of the elite, but their home form remains dominant with the Ligue 1 leaders unbeaten and six things clear in the French top flight, having won eight of 10 Championnat matches so far.
Atleti will be the tenth Spanish team that PSG faces in the continental competition and Lille OSC ended Simeone’s unbeaten record against French teams before this date. A three-1 away win at Feyenoord last season is the only away victory Los Colchoneros have achieved in their 10 Champions League away games, a run that still has seven defeats. An on-field knockout like nine in his top 11 campaigns is far from assured, so Simeone wants at least a final lead of 24, which is not the case at the moment due to the goal deficit. Regionally, however, Atlético are third in the table and beat Las Palmas 2-0 over the weekend.

UCL so far
PSG opened with a tight and fortuitous 1-0 victory over debutants Girona FC before losing 2-0 at Arsenal and drawing 1-1 at home to PSV Eindhoven. The final result is possibly the most problematic, as it puts the power here ahead of a showdown with Bayern Munich, who also desperately need trouble. Les Parisiens have scored 12 of their UCL-high 14 goals in the second phase and are three points behind the eight leaders who could guarantee an automatic place in the round of 16. Atleti winning 3-1 against LOSC was a second immediate defeat in the Champions League and then a 4-0 rout against Benfica despite opening with a 2-1 victory over RB Leipzig. There has only been a second month in which Atlético have lost three consecutive games at the top of European football, so the embattled Simeone will strive to stay away from that in Paris.
Workforce information
PSG: Gianluigi Donnarumma was replaced by Matvey Safonov and Marco Asensio entered the XI alongside Fabián Ruiz for the victory over Lens. Ousmane Dembélé needs to start on the right with Bradley Barcola on the left, but Asensio is not guaranteed to start in the centre. Gonçalo Ramos, Presnel Kimpembe and Atleti academy graduate Lucas Hernández are out of this one.
Possible PSG XI: Donnarumma; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes; Zaire-Emery, Vitinha, Neves; Dembélé, Lee, Barcola.
Athletic: Giuliano Simeone will hope to start, but Antoine Griezmann, Angel Correa and Alexander Sorloth are also in the mix. Julián Álvarez has 13 goal involvements in 20 UCL appearances, but has scored just once and assisted one more in eight away games. Robin Le Normand, Marcos Llorente and César Azpilicueta are all injured on the occasion. Thomas Lemar is undecided even though Pablo Barrios can barely attribute it.
Possible Atlético XI: Oblak; Molina, Witsel, Giménez, Reinildo; De Paul, Koke, Barrios, Lino; Álvarez, Griezmann.
Prediction
This will be a big game for all sides as Luis Enrique and Diego Simeone need a win. The French giants look more convincing given their missed chances to overcome the combatants, but their Spanish guests are under strength after two defeats. This must be reasonably worrying, but PSG must have enough to emerge victorious and achieve a victory in the second phase of the league. Choose: PSG 2, Atlético 1.
