Raiders fire offensive coordinator Luke Getsy and two other offensive assistants after falling to 2-7
The Las Vegas Raiders changed quarterbacks once again on Sunday, benching Gardner Minshew for Desmond Ridder in a blowout loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Now they are making substantial changes to their offensive staff, firing offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, offensive design master James Cregg and quarterback master Scangarello. Hours later, the club fell to 2-7 on the season.

Getsy, 40, was in his first season with the team under unused teacher Antonio Pierce, who served as the Raiders’ intermediate teacher for all nine games of the 2023 campaign.

The Raiders entered Sunday’s game against the Bengals ranked 28th in overall offense and 26th in scoring. They’ve been mired in quarterback trouble all year, with Minshew and second-year signal-caller Aidan O’Connell in the past splitting the class down the middle after a chronic summerfest. Ridder, who had just been kicked off the Cardinals’ practice squad in late October, completed Sunday’s loss at quarterback, even though Pierce did not decide to retain the newcomer in his place going forward.

Before joining Las Vegas, Getsy spent two seasons as the Chicago Bears’ offensive coordinator, a period during which he received complaints for causing mercurial effects from former first-round quarterback Justin Gardens. He is probably best known for his work with the Green Bay Packers, serving as Aaron Rodgers’ quarterback teacher and passing game coordinator from 2020 to 2021, when Rodgers won back-to-back NFL MVPs.

Getsy’s firing after just nine games makes him one of the fastest assistants to be fired in NFL history; The Arizona Cardinals previously released offensive coordinator Mike McCoy and then just seven games during the 2008 season.

Passing game coordinator Scott Turner is a candidate to move in as an offensive play-caller, according to NFL Media.

Cregg and Scangarello were also in their first seasons with Las Vegas. Cregg, 51, spent the previous two seasons as the San Francisco 49ers’ offensive design teacher. Scangarello, 52, worked as the Denver Broncos’ offensive coordinator in 2019 and was most recently the offensive coordinator at the University of Kentucky in 2022 before landing with the Raiders.
