Wade was part of Australia’s squad in the International T20 Cup in June and it was expected that event would mark the end of his global career as he was overtaken for the UK tour in September. By March, he had retired from red-ball cricket in Tasmania’s next run to the Sheffield Preserve final.
“I was fully aware that my international days would probably end at the end of the last T20 World Cup. My international retirement and my training have been a constant conversation with George [Bailey] and andrew [McDonald] in the last six months,” Wade said.
“Coaching has been on my radar for the past few years and fortunately I have been presented with some great opportunities, which I am very grateful and excited for.”
“As I end my international career, I want to thank all my Australian teammates, staff and coaches,” he said. “I enjoyed the journey, as challenging as it may be internationally. Without good people around me, I would never have gotten as much out of myself as I did.
“I also thank my country, my parents, my parents and my sisters for the many hours they dedicated over time to taking me to the games and training.
“Finally, to Julia and the children. I can’t thank you enough for the sacrifices you have made so that I can continue pursuing my dreams. There are no words that can explain how grateful I am to them, none of this would have happened without your support. “.
Wade’s Test career reached 2021, during the Republic’s previous tour of India, having made a successful return to the team as a representative batsman for the 2019 Ashes, where he scored two centuries. His ODI peak also came in 2021, when he briefly returned to the team after a four-year opening during their trip to the West Indies during the Covid period.
“Congratulations to Matthew on what has been a wonderful international career during which his skill and versatility have made him an outstanding performer across all formats,” said Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley.
“I am delighted that he will add to his enormous contribution by coaching the next generation of stars and also that he will continue to light up the Big Bash with the Hobart Hurricanes.”
