A Hogwarts Legacy player tracks the amount of time needed to watch every cutscene from the Merlin Trial through to the conclusion and reports the findings.
During the Merlin Trials, a Hogwarts Legacy player became so impatient while waiting for the cutscenes that they calculated how long it would take to watch them all. The outcomes have delighted fans of Hogwarts Legacy and demonstrated that perhaps these scenes do indeed drag on for too long.
Merlin, like the real-world legend, is a legendary wizard who lived in the Dark Ages and actively participated in King Arthur’s court in the Harry Potter universe. In Hogwarts Legacy, however, he also went to Hogwarts, became a famous Slytherin, and left a few challenges for players to solve. These are the famous Merlin Trials, which see the players traveling all over the map to solve them. They are fairly popular Exploration Challenges, and completing them can grant players new Gear Inventory Slots, which is beneficial to Hogwarts Legacy players who are currently experiencing gear capacity issues.
Reddit user ChezKeetel provided an answer to a query that many impatient players had today: how long does it take to watch the animation of all 95 Merlin Trials? They claim it takes 950 seconds, or roughly 16 minutes, which the players will never get back. Their math is correct because it takes each animation about 10 seconds to complete.

The Gryffindor-aligned AHappyT-Rex, who left a comment on the Reddit post, agreed that the game urgently needs a skip button for these scenes because they take too long. They claimed that because of this, they nearly gave up on trying to complete the Platinum Trophy requirements for the Hogwarts Legacy endgame content. Some people made humorous suggestions for what to do when the cutscene begins. For instance, some gamers suggested that the player use this opportunity to grab a quick snack.
This is not the first time the Merlin Trials have been the subject of an online debate. A hilarious bug that ruined a Hogwarts Legacy player’s attempt at the Merlin Trial occurred a few days ago. A large stone ball that was used to complete the challenge in this case glitched, picked up speed, ran into a fence, then shot up into the air like a rocket and ended up inside Black Lake. This was the main issue, not the animation that starts the trial. However, the entire process didn’t take as long as watching every cutscene from the Merlin Trial.
Hogwarts Legacy is currently available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S; versions for PS4 and Xbox One will be released on April 4 and July 25 for the Switch, respectively.
